This program is SHAREWARE. You may use it for 30 days to see if you like
it. If you continue to use it after 30 days, you must send Patrick Harvey
a check for $15 for continued use of the program. For network users, the
fee is $15 for the first PC and $5 more for each additional PC. I deal on
the honor system. There is nothing crippled or turned off in this software.
Version 1.2 : Allows for the reformatting of text imported by cutting
and pasting.
Version 1.1 : This version made the importation function more robust.
What is MrAnswer 1.2?
MrAnswer allows a user to do the following:
Type in notes about a topic and save them to view later.
Cut and paste notes into the program and save them to view later.
Later, if printing problems should occur when trying to print a record
that was pasted into this program and then saved, clicking on the
[R]eformtting button will add hard carriage returns so that it may
print easier.
Add a reminder date to a set of notes to make them appear automatically
on that date (if they are in the default directory).
Search all notes in a particular directory for any word or phrase in the
entire record.
Password protect the program to keep others out.
Update or delete a record.
Search by up to 2 search strings as well as a reminder date. The user
may narrow this search to records created on a certain day, month,
or year.
Keep separate databases in different directories.
Print reminders set to that date and print an individual reminder.
Import data from other programs or electronic organizers which
have the ability to export in quote/comma-delimited format.
GUIDELINES:
There must be a C: drive on the workstation using this program EVEN
if you are actually running MrAnswer from a network drive. The program
will work from a local or network drive.
USING THE PROGRAM:
HOW TO SAVE NEW NOTES:
Make sure the appropriate directory is selected in the Location of Data list
box. You may type in a new directory into that field at anytime as long
as the directory already exists on the local or network drive.
Type in or paste your notes into the large text box of the program's
main menu.
You may type in a reminder date for that note in the separate reminder date
text box above the main text box.
Click on save to save that record.
HOW TO SEARCH FOR A RECORD:
You may type in up to two words or phrases to search for. Type them in the
2 Search Strings To Look For boxes. You may also specify a reminder date
to look for in the Reminder Date box. If one or both of the two search
strings is found, the record will be retrieved. If a reminder date is
specified, then at least one of the search strings must be found AND the
reminder date much be found.
To quicken the search, a 2-digit day, month, and/or year may be specifed
in the appropriately marked fields. This will greatly increase searching
speed since only the records created on the specified month, day, and/or
year will be searched.
Once a match is found it will be displayed. You will be given the option
to continue the search. You may continue the search or cancel it.
Once a record is retrieved, you may edit it and resave it, or you may
delete it. You may also print it!
MNORE INFO:
If you would like to set an entry password, click the Password button and
follow the prompts.
If you would like to contact the author, click the About The Author button.
IMPORTING RECORDS FROM OTHER PROGRAMS OR ELECTRONIC ORGANIZERS:
If you would like to import records from another program you may use the
Import button. The program may only import data from programs which can
save data in form such as is shown below:
"blah blah","blah blah","blah blah blah"
"","","I am a duck"
"ha ha","","Kiss the wind"
The data must be saved in a plain ASCII text file in a file with an
extension of .TXT.
You will notice that the data is kept within quotation marks and each set of
data is separated by commas. Each record must contain the same number
of data fields. For example, each record above has 3 pieces of data. In
order for the program to import your data, each record MUST have the same
number of data items like you see above.
PLEASE NOTE:
Each record takes 2 seconds to import. This is to ensure that each record
receives a unique name when added into the current directory. Importing
many records of data may take a long time. When importing data, you must
know how many pieces of data reside in each record before you begin to
import the data. You will be asked to type in the number of data items
per record.
CHECKING FOR ALARMS:
If the Check for Alarms check box is checked, the program will search the
default directory for reminder dates matching that day's date. Any records
with a matching date will appear on a special screen devoted to these alarms.
This screen may hold alarms containing up to a total of 32000 characters.
You may also print these reminders.
Once you are in the main menu, you may also search for a reminder date alone.
This will allow you to search for records containing any reminder date.
HOW TO ADD DIRECTORIES TO THE LOCATION OF DATA LIST BOX:
If you create a file called DIRLIST.DAT in the directory containing
this program, the program will see it and will add the paths specifed in this
file to the list of directories the user may choose.
If you create a file called DIRLIST.DAT in the root directory of your
C: drive, the program will also add these paths to the list of directories
the use may choose.
By doing this, all users may share certain databases on the network, but
may also have other personal directories from their local hard drive added
to their individual list of available directories.
A FEW ADDITIONAL ITEMS OF NOTE:
If you are using this program on a network, you must have the appropriate
rights to the used directories.
Any directories you wish to use to contain data, other the the default
C:\MRANS directory, should be created by you before using the program.
If you save a directory as a default and it also appears in a DIRLIST.DAT
file, it will appear twice in the list box of directories, but this fact
will not hurt anything.
Make sure there are no spaces before or after any directory path specified in
the DIRLIST.DAT files you create.
When printing and presented with the window to choose a font from, pressing
ESC or CANCEL will NOT cause the program from printing. Don't click on
PRINT unless you mean it!
There is a slight chance that networked users may experience a file
locking problem if they attempt to both access a particular file at
a time, but the chance of this is small due to the speed at which files
are opened and closed.
When importing a file, no one else should be running the program and
accessing data from the specified directory (where the imported data is
being imported to).
As far as the author knows, the program is year 2000 compliant as long
as your PC is!
Quotation marks may not be used in any record or text box.
Dates must be entered as specified above the reminder date text box.
With some printers ,which do not support word wrapping, you may find that
when you print a record, some lines may print off the sides of the page.
Clicking on the R button will [R]eformat the displayed record so it may be
easily printed. Click SAVE to save these changes.
